Transcript:

My name is Harriet Russell. I’m the director of Business Ease Overseas. Today I’m going to share with you 3 Essential Tips that Managers and Multicultural Teams Should Know!

There are so many tips I could share with you, but let’s start with three today.

My first tip is know the culture’s values. Is the culture you’re working with or the cultures that you are working with more collective where the group is more important than the individual? Is the culture one where the hierarchy is highly respected, or is it more egalitarian where all the team members have the same level of decision making invoice? Is it more important, the relationship between the people, or is it more important to get things done? How are you going to find this out?

One thing you can do right in your local community is to visit a cultural center of that country. Another thing you can do is find someone from that culture that lives in your neighborhood and strike up a conversation. Everyone wants to share about their culture. You can also, of course, go to your library and use resources that are published. I caution you against Googling because you never know what you’re going to find out there. Use valued and trusted resources for your research.

My second tip is know how they communicate in that culture. Is it an informal or a formal culture? Are rituals of introducing oneself with a business card or a handshake important? How do people perceive nonverbal communication, like touch and eye contact? This varies between different cultures. Cultures differ in how people accept and give feedback. Is criticism to be done in front of the group or not at all? How about praise? In some cultures, praise is not considered positive because it singles a person out from the collective team and unit, and their identity is more with the team rather than themselves, so be observant and understand how people relate to what you say, how you say it, and also know that silence sometimes is golden.

My third tip is know yourself. Respect and trust and know yourself means that you are directly honest with how you know that you are inside yourself. When you are able to understand what are your trigger points, what’s your personality like, are you patient or not patient, then you’re able to recognize that in the face of a group of people. Accepting, respecting and knowing yourself comes first. Then seeing how you see others through an open channel of honesty allows you to relax, let go, and be more present in the moment as you communicate with your team across cultures.

In this episode Michael Dealoia: “Tech Czar”, Columnist, and Entrepreneur shares How to Improve the NEO Tech Community in 3 Easy Steps.

After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Michael’s, Term as Cleveland Tech Czar, Charlie Brown Moment, Audacious Grandfathers, and more!

Transcript:

My name is Michael DeAloia. I’m the Tech Columnist for The Plain Dealer. Today we’re going to be chatting about how to improve the northeast Ohio tech community in three easy steps.

So, the first easy step to improve the northeast Ohio tech community would be capital. We have a dearth of Series A capital right now. Northeast Ohio’s been just phenomenal in creating the startup environment. So there’s a lot of entrepreneurs right now creating their own little companies, and getting funded, funding for that. However, as they grow to a certain point, there’s no capital to help them, and so what we need is a concerted effort in northeast Ohio, is to create the next generation of Series A capital and venture capital funds for the entrepreneurs.

It would be great to see some of the banking companies create a program for the emerging growth or startup company in northeast Ohio. Just like you would for a credit card as a college student. You get the credit card. You earn a little bit of credit. The same for a startup company. They need to earn their credit, but the banks also have to give it.

Scale is the two-sided coin, right? It’s Janus, the two-faced god in Roman history. For example, in Silicon Valley, scale is an easy proposition. You take two people out of Apple, put them in a room with five million dollars, and in three years they’ll have a 100 million dollar company. Scale is revenue generation, and in northeast Ohio, we’ve had a bit of a problem scaling our companies up to a size, where they can, one, take on additional capital, hire a number of individuals.

There’s a second side to scale as well, and that is do you have enough people in northeast Ohio to help the company scale? In this case, I think we don’t have enough human capital to scale the companies that we have. There are, however, really interesting platforms to make that happen. Tech elevator being one, where you train for 8 to 12 weeks to learn a technology trade, and then jump on into the tech company. But also, I think immigration could be a great solution to solving this problem in northeast Ohio.

Talking about does northeast Ohio have the appropriate culture to succeed, in the 10 years that I’ve been in the tech community in northeast Ohio, you’ve seen a dramatic change, that there is an acceptance of technology as an industry of entrepreneurship. The appropriate culture that we should be looking at in northeast Ohio should be married upon the Silicon Valley method, which is target young, intellectually curious individuals, ply them with good capital to grow a company. It doesn’t even have to be a great idea, just a good idea, that they can experiment. They can also fail.

The venture capital model in Silicon Valley is we know that these individuals are going to fail with this money. That’s okay, because we got more to give them for the next big thing that they may have. You don’t see that quite yet in northeast Ohio, but we’re getting there. It’s only been 10 years, and Silicon Valley’s been around for 40 or 50 years, so there’s still time in the game.

So, in summary, the three things that we’ve talked about today, capital, scale and culture, are in a really unique place in northeast Ohio, and I’m putting out the clarion call for those who are already engaged in the tech community, and for the non-profit entities, the foundations and all the other interested parties in northeast Ohio, to get together and form a policy to solve these issues today.

In this episode Ron Shaw; Financial coach, Retirement expert, and Accomplished Leader shares 1 Must Have Policy That Will Change Your Business!

After the tip, we go backstage where Ron shares, Career Obstacles, Rewards in a challenging industry, A boxing lesson, and more!

Transcript:

I’m Ron Shaw, Financial Coach and Retirement Expert for Reserve Investment Group. Today I’m going to talk about one must have policy that can save your business. Most business owners already know about the basic policies, like disability insurance, or even traditional life insurance, but one that they always leave out is key person insurance.

Key person insurance covers the loss of a key employee. A definition of a key person could be anyone that plays a crucial role in your business. So, that could be anyone like the head chef, or the head editor, or even the best sales person, anyone that plays a vital role in the business’ success. Key person insurance can help bring benefits to your company such as direct financial loss. Example, let’s just say your favorite sales person, or the best sales person, you lose him, your money stops right then and there. Whereas if you had the key person insurance, you’d be able to find a new sales rep, train him to the level of the sales rep that you lost, and still be able to continue business as normal.

Another example of that would be, if you can’t find a replacement, sometimes people are just that good, they’re irreplaceable. So, the key person insurance would give you the necessary funds to transition out of that business to move into something else that you might want to do, or even as a severance package. Let’s just say you have employees, you can’t just up and leave on them. This can also serve as a severance package, and you can pay your employees, so that way they can find and transition into something else.

While most business owners already know about disability insurance, and also traditional life insurance, key person insurance should definitely be a part of your overall protection package.

In this episode Natalie Bauman; Entrepreneur, Chief storyteller, And video producer shares 3 Methods to Reveal the Heart of a Testimonial Video!

After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Natalie’s, Pebble in the pond, Life on the stage, Path to purpose, and more!

Transcript:

I’m Natalie Bauman, the founder and CEO of the Digital Mosaic. I’m going to share three methods to reveal the heart of a testimonial video.

Everyone in business knows the value of an emotional video to get their point across for whoever they’re selling to, talking to, communicating with. The first method to help really create an impactful video for testimonials is to capture the why. When your video testimonial reveals the why, why does somebody support your organization, why is your product important to them, how have you touched their life, then you have something really valuable and meaningful because it’s from the heart.

The second method to ensure a really special video is to accept the unexpected. A lot of times, you might walk into a video interview expecting to get a certain type of answer, but sometimes what you get is even more magical. Don’t have your agenda in mind of what you want them to talk about. Bring up the subject and let them go with it. Encourage them with a, “Yes. Uh huh. Tell me more”, and then you’ll find that what they bring you is often much better than what you could have anticipated to start with.

The final method that I wanted to share today is to go deeper. When you’re interviewing somebody, take those precious moments of silence where they pause and say nothing. Encourage them with your eyes or ask them, “And then what? Tell me more.” Be a patient listener and be really there in the moment with them. The things that people will reveal can be the most meaningful part of your business video testimonial.

The heart of your testimonial videos are the things that are unexpected, the deeper dive into the content, and allowing somebody to just have a moment to really think about what they want to say. If you can bring those into your next video testimonial that you create, I think you might find there’s some magic there.

In this episode Leslie Dickson; Entrepreneur, Leadership developer, and Executive Communications coach shares the 4 Key Components to Gaining Personal Credibility

After the tip, we go backstage where Leslie shares, An introvert’s story, The Voice Pro journey, An exercise in clarity, and more!

Transcript:

I’m Leslie Dickson, President and CEO of VoicePRO. Today I’m going to share with you the four key components of gaining your personal credibility. Credibility is one of those qualities that everybody wants and it is attainable. So the word, credibility actually comes from the Latin root word credere, which means to believe. So, if you’re credible, you are believable. The challenge plays out in the fact that everybody else determines whether or not you’re credible. You can’t decide yourself that you are, you have to rely on others to decide.

Integrity is the first key component that makes up your credibility. What does integrity mean? Integrity means your honesty, your trustworthiness, and most importantly your follow through. So you do what you say you’re going to do, when you say you’re going to do it.

The second component that makes up your credibility is your expertise. This is your job knowledge, your experience, your homework, your preparedness, everything that goes into what you know about what you’re talking about. It also plays out in what you don’t know. There’s always this fear factor of being asked a question that you don’t know the answer to. It’s perfectly okay to respond by saying, “I don’t have that information right now but I know where to get it, and I’ll get back to you with the information and the answer.”

The third component of credibility is dynamism. What is dynamism? Dynamism is your passion, your conviction, your enthusiasm about what you’re talking about. If you cannot convey that you care about what you’re saying, nobody’s going to believe you at all.

The fourth component to credibility is your openness. Now that really plays out in two different ways. One is being open to input, or ideas, or viewpoints of other people. So you’re open to hearing what they bring to the table. The second piece is opening yourself up. You know we all want to come across as being perfect, and professional, and excellent at what we do. But allowing yourself to be vulnerable and to let perfect go, actually will enhance your credibility immensely.

So now you know the four key components that will convey your personal credibility. But the challenge here is not only do you need to have these qualities yourself, because that will make you a good person, you have to convey them. You have to show other people that you have these qualities. If you show them, they will believe you and you will then have credibility yourself.

In this episode Bruce Felber Corporate Brand Specialist, Marketing Czar, Ultimate Volunteer shares Outcome Selling Vs. Product Selling!

After the tip, we go backstage where Bruce shares, Why he does what he does, How he gives back at work, His favorite marketing tool and more!

Transcript:

My name is Bruce Felber. I am the corporate brand specialist for The Image Group. Today I’m going to talk about outcome selling versus product selling and what it means to you. The outcome is what you expect to happen out of this marketing campaign as opposed to a quick fix of a product or a service to accomplish that. Outcome selling is the end result that you or your client desire to move your marketing forward. What they want and what they want the project to be. An outcome is I want 60% more sales in widgets this month and I want to do it with the least amount of dollars as possible, or I have a new brand and I need to get the brand out there, as opposed to product selling or transactional selling, which is coming up with a solution that may be a temporary fix, but it’s not the ultimate solution. It may not be the desired result.

An example of a product would be a brochure, trade show, promotion, that type of thing. Get the best results for you or your client by learning to understand how important the outcome is, as opposed to the quick fix of a product or service. The first step is to probe your customer. What I mean by that is don’t be afraid to ask questions. Why is this product important to your consumer, or to your audience? What do you want it to do? Why do you wanna increase sales? Why is it important to you? What’s the profit structure. That’s what probing is … learning what your customers needs are and understanding their desires.

The wrong questions would be … where do you want this to class? When do you want this to go out there? Those are transactional questions. After [inaudible 00:01:41] has been reached and the desired outcomes, it’s now time to develop with continuity campaign to carry those messages out to the desired audience consistently and with the same message. An example of a continuity program is using the same colors, the same typeface, the same graphics to get that message across. And that means carrying it across any part of the campaign that you do, so that you’re always tying back into the tagline, the message, and the brand.

They should carry the same message, and it should have that strong call to action. Call to action is what do you want me to do when I’ve received this ad, I’ve received this piece? Do you want me to call you? Go to a website? Go to an event? Respond? So now, it’s your chance to get the big picture by focusing on outcome rather than individual product or transactional sales.

In this episode Danielle Yonek; mom of 3, business owner, and photo story teller shares her Secrets for Creating an Amazing Experience for Your Clients!

After the tip, we go backstage where Danielle shares, When not to listen to advice, Her favorite photo shoot, Two amazing inspirations and more!

Transcript:

My name is Danielle Yonek, and I am the owner and photographer of Yonek Photography and, today, I’m going to share with you my secrets for creating an amazing experience for your clients.

My first secret is you want to ask questions to your clients so that way you can get to know them a little bit better. The more that you know your clients and the more that you’re able to fulfill their needs, the happier that they’ll be and the better products you’re going to be able to deliver to them in the end.

If they have certain likes, dislikes, certain interests, are they involved in sports, do they read a lot, do they like cats, simple things like that. I ask them what are their interests and where, if they have any locations in mind of where they would want to go, so, that way, I can get to know them and I can customize their session for them and, ultimately, it makes them more happy during the entire process.

My second secret is to make suggestions to your clients. Your clients are coming to you because of your product and they want your expertise and they want your information that you have, so give them suggestions based on the questions that you’ve asked so that you can deliver them a better experience of the overall product.

With my clients, I make suggestions with them on different outfits to wear, what is going to be a more timeless look and different locations that we can use based on, again, on the questions that I’ve asked them to figure out what makes them who they are at this time.

My final secret is to just have fun. You want to have fun with your clients, so, that way, their experience is way better. The better their experience is, the better it is for everyone involved.

I get bored very easily, so I don’t want to sit around and do the same thing all the time. I want to have fun with it, and I want them to have fun.

Those are my three secrets to creating an amazing experience for your clients. Ask questions, make suggestion, and just have fun.

In this episode Tony Felice, entrepreneur, lifelong learner, and technology guru shares Consulting Skills That Every Entrepreneur Needs!

After the tip, we go backstage where Tony shares, His passion for the truth, Teacher vs. Entrepreneur, Real world advice and more.

Transcript:

I’m Tony Felice with Inline Technology Services and I’d like to talk about consulting skills that every entrepreneur needs. Well, the first and most obvious skill of a consultant is competency. You have to choose an area of expertise, in which you can keep yourself current and know what you’re talking about and you have to know where that fits into the broader picture that your clients are going to be concerned with. You need to know where the boundaries of your knowledge are, because there may be something that you’re just not aware of and as long as you have a good idea of what the limits of your own knowledge are, you’re not going to get yourself or your clients in trouble.

The next skill, is to be yourself. It’s very tempting to be bland, to try not to offend anyone, but the problem there is that you don’t give people a chance to know who you actually are and they don’t get to know and even anticipate the unique contributions that you might be able to make to them.

Next, comes the very important skill of listening intently. You may be the expert on the subject being talked about, but you need to walk into the room knowing that you’re going to learn something that you didn’t know. It may be about your subject, it may be about the people in the room are thinking about it or what they feel or what they’re afraid of, but you’re going to learn something that you didn’t know.

The next skill is the ability to adapt your presentation to your audience. If you’ve been listening intently, you know something about what they think, what they feel, how much they understand about the technical subject being discussed and what they want to know. Be careful not to talk down and insult someone when they’ve showed you that they have a certain amount of knowledge and be careful not to do things like using jargon or acronyms or things that only someone who is a specialist in your field can understand.

The next skill, brings us really to the culmination of the consulting process. The way you’ve been communicating, has allowed the people you’re working with to really understand what you’re saying, allowed you to really understand what they’re saying, what their needs are, what they’re looking for and now you’re in a position to offer a really unique insight. You can offer an analysis that’s in some way different from anyone else would have come up with. You bring your own unique insight or your own frame of reference to the situation. Remember, what your clients are looking for from you, is help to come to an understanding or a solution that they wouldn’t have come to without you, so this is where you really shine. This is where you come up with an insight that you’d have to have been you to understand or to think of and at this point they’re ready to hear it.

In this episode Chris Hatala; Dreamer, Independant, and Video Gamer shares 3 Ways to use FUN to Create a Better Workplace

After the tip, we go backstage where Chris, Tells how he started the second largest gaming tournament in the world, How he brings games to business, and business to games, Transports us to a virtual world and more!

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Chris Hatala, Final Boss of Games Done Legit, and today I’m going to help you with 3 Ways to use FUN to create a Better Workplace. Our mission is to use fun to create better team-building, better training, better events for the workplace, and we’re going to give you three tips on how to do that today.

Our first tip today is engage everybody. You definitely want a wide variety of activities that you do throughout the year, some physical, some mental. You don’t want any team members to feel like they’ve been left out or a team member to feel like everyone else is taking the lead and they never get the opportunity to kind of shine and lead the way.

Some examples that we’ve found to cover a lot of different bases, the escape rooms are really popular right now, doing puzzles, gaming in the workplace, anything with virtual reality is pretty crazy, and keep your stable of traditional activities as well. Just find new things that you see engage your team members in really different ways. The most important thing is, find activities that your team members can communicate before the activity, during the activity and after the activity.

Number two is take chances. Keep your ears open for new trends in team building in corporate events. There’s a wide variety of HR networking organizations, there’s conferences and trade shows throughout the year, and there’s always companies there with new ideas and they’re eager to share those with you. There’s the HR Star Conference, Cleveland SHRM is an awesome HR organization, lots of ideas, lots of networking. An easy way that’s free, set up some Google alerts that are just team-building or unique team-building, new team-building, and those can go right in your inbox every day. That’s one super easy way for you to constantly have a flow of new ideas.

Our third tip is don’t get stale. Stay in contact with other companies, see what other companies are doing. You might be able to help each other retain clients. Going back to that number one, find a wide variety of activities and, based on your employees’ feedback, see what they really like and then find related activities that can reinforce those goals that worked really well for you and your successful ones.

Feel free to reach out on LinkedIn if you would like. I like to have a constant dialogue going with other HR professionals, other business owners, to figure out what are the most fun activities that we can all come up for the workplace to make everyone happier.

In this episode John Hornyak; Business owner, Producer, Meeting Coordinator shares Why Less is More in Your Communications!

After the tip, we go backstage where John shares, His smiling dog, His approach to keeping the mind and body sharp, His favorite source for sales and marketing tips, and more.

Transcript:

My name is John Hornyak and the name of my company is X2 Media, and I’m going to talk about why less is more in your communications. One of the things that’s the most important these days with the bombardment of information, everybody is using their mobile phones, their tablets, their laptops, everywhere, 24/7. You have to get your message across. You have more competition than you ever had before.

It’s imperative that you eliminate all the clutter in your presentations and get down to the basic facts of what’s important for your customer, what your value statement is to your customer, to your prospect, or to your audience, and develop that value statement in a way, shape and form and present it in the shortest amount of time possible and whittle down what information is important and what information is not so important. Finally, my advice would be make it easy to see through the clutter.

If you can remember, there was a commercial from Vidal Sassoon and one of their statements at the end of the commercial was, “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.” The same holds true in our business. You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. That is what I try to get across to our clients in terms of refining their message down to a point where they will be remembered.

After the tip, we go backstage where Breanna Shares the personal story of being a Cavs girl turned entrepreneur, Her passion for boosting women’s confidence, And the Shameless Lady Walk

Transcript:

I’m Breanna Aponte, CEO of Shameless LLC.

How to grow your business through effective collaboration.

Well, with my business, I knew that I had three things that would really make my business grow. One was media. I needed a way to show people what it was that I was doing. Then I needed the marketing. I needed graphics. I needed a way to promote those things that was I coming up to get it out there. Then the third one was that I needed different businesses that could effectively help my business, but wasn’t in direct competition because everything that I do involves women. I thought of things like beauty, health, and wellness. I decided to take those three things and figure out ways that I could collaborate without it having to come out of my pocket so that I can get those things that I needed for that growth.

For media collaboration, I know a lot of photographers and videographers in the Cleveland area. I know that one thing that I have that they don’t have is a following and a good clientele. I have a women organization where my ladies can be used as portfolio-builders for these media, whether it’s photography or videography, and I agreed with them to, “Hey, do this work for me for free and in return I will give you clientele and I will promote your business.”

With graphic designing, that’s basically the flyers, the promotional work that is put on my social media, any ad campaigns, and I knew a couple people who were trying to start their own marketing companies who needed word spread and that needed clientele. Again, I took my following and my clientele and I made my clients their clients, and they offered me their work for free.

You can take your services that you offer and another person’s services that they might offer that doesn’t compete with one another but that could benefit one another. It’s a way to invest your time and invest your talent and invest your business without having to take out those financial burdens and have to pay for them.

Being that my brand is Shameless and I have and organization called “Shameless Ladies,” all of our women want to feel beautiful. That means I’m giving them the aspect where they’re getting the confidence but they need their hair, their makeup, their nails, health supplies, they want to lose weight, they want to be in shape. I got together with some nutritional people, handed out product or did personal training. I got with salons, nail techs, makeup artists, and I had them offer their services, as well, either to me so that I could save money on getting glammed up and I had, in return, promoted their business.

Through collaborations, you can build and grow your business without breaking the bank.

In this episode Dan Weiss, President of adatasol custom database solutions, entrepreneur, and father of 6 Explains 3 Steps to Remove the Bottlenecks in your Company’s Workflow!

After the tip, we go backstage to learn about, Thinking the Macro Way, Being Humble with Swagger, Taxi-ing Around and more!

Transcript:

My name is Dan Weiss, president of Adatasol Custom Database Solutions, and I’ll be speaking about three steps to remove the bottlenecks in your business’ workflow.

An example of bottlenecks would be too much information in too many places. You might have your sales leads in one place, your company contacts in another, and project information in a whole other place.

The bottleneck is caused because you have the data in those different places and you literally have to copy it from place to place. You can imagine the productivity lost between copying the data from place to place, and what also often happens is a loss of data. There’s a huge problem with data loss between copying that lead, that sales lead. Once they become a company, well, what happens if you forget to copy part of the address, for example? Now you’ve got the address in two different places. That’s a perfect example of all of a sudden you have data that’s messed up between two different locations.

The first step is organizing your information into definable pieces. Classic example would be having your sales leads and then having customers and then having projects and then having invoices, as an example, and trying to figure out, “Well, this piece links to this piece, links to this piece, links to this piece, ideally.”

The second step is figuring out what is that exact relationship. How does the information relate together? It’s really a matter of saying, “How does a sales lead, in my example, have you uniqueness between the sales lead and the customer, and then a customer that becomes multiple projects, and those become multiple invoices?” Really, it’s a matter of saying, “Well, we have a unique ID between those records, that information, and defining those as unique pieces.”

The third step is to find a tool that’s gonna allow you to create something to link all this information together easily. Luckily, in our world today we have tools on the Internet that are available and we have tools like FileMaker, the one that we tend to use a lot, that allow people, end users, to develop tools to do these things themselves.

An ideal situation would be one where they’ve had a 10 to one savings, something that took 10 days or 10 hours or 10 minutes is now taking one.

If you follow these steps, you’ve got an enlightened workforce that is using an accessible tool with centralized information.

After the tip, we go backstage where Carol shares, Her Way Back to What Drives Her, The “Hat” Collection of an Entrepreneur, Her Coach’s Eye, and more!

Transcript:

I’m Carol Mack, Owner of CLE Sports PT and Performance. I have three tips to make your workouts work for you.

Tip number one, don’t let an injury sideline you or pain. You may be surprised at how many things you can still do to burn calories or stay in shape while you’re hurt. The best way to figure out what to do for your body is to talk to a PT and find out. It might be as simple as modifying how deep you squat or changing around a yoga pose or just finding a different activity to do for a couple weeks while you heal up.

Tip number two, listen to your body. There’s days that you need to push yourself and there’s days that you need to back down too. The key is figuring out what your body needs at any given time and giving your body what it needs. It’s never a bad idea to back down on mileage if you’re running for a week or so or doing more active recovery, foam rolling, stretching, that kind of thing instead of a heavy duty workout, then knowing when you need to push and maybe increase your mileage.

Tip number three, move it or lose it. It’s such a cliché phrase, but it’s so important. As we age, it becomes even more important to stay strong and to stay flexible. As long as you can stay active, be active.

There you have it. Follow these three tips to help your workouts keep you healthy, strong, and feeling your best.

After the tip, we go backstage where Joel shares, The Must Have Mindset for Success, Why Technology is Driving Marketing today, The Core Beliefs of Entrepreneurs Worldwide and more!

Transcript:

I’m Joel Goldstein, Goldstein Group Communications, and I’m going to tell you why entrepreneurs should never go it alone.

I’ll tell you a secret. There’s a lot of days when I wake up and I don’t know what the heck I’m doing. I’m an entrepreneur, and I’ve worked with some of the smartest entrepreneurs that you’d ever want to meet, and when you get them alone in a bar and you’re talking to them, they’ll, a lot of times, admit the same thing to you, that they just don’t know what they’re doing. We all need help, coaching, mentoring, advise, suggestions, advisors. Nobody wants to reinvent the wheel. We all want to know. If I’ve got the same problem that somebody else has already solved before, I’d like to know how other people have solved that.

I started my business 23 years ago, and I was very much a reluctant entrepreneur. I’m in a marketing agency, and when I started out, I thought, “Well, the last thing in the world that Cleveland needs is another PR agency, another marketing agency,” but I started out, and I quickly realized that I was going to have a lot of problems, I was going to have a lot of questions, and I needed to turn to people that would be able to help me save some time and avoid making some of the mistakes that other people have made before.

One of the groups that I joined, I joined a variety of different groups, but one of the groups that I joined was a group called Entrepreneurs Organization. The people from this organization are entrepreneurs from all over the world. They’re not just from the United States. That’s actually one of the things that I like about it the best. I’m able to talk to people from Japan and Singapore and Hong Kong and Europe, and you’re able to learn how they solve problems, and it’s amazing how similar the problems are that we all face, but the people that I’ve met and the people that I’ve learned from are just incredible. It was a tremendously rich learning experience that I’ve had with these people, and they’ve helped me so much in running my business and learning how to do the strategies that are going to make my business grow. I’ve watched them do it, and I’ve been able to apply those same principles to help my business grow faster than if I had tried to go it alone.

When you think about how to run your business, it’s so important to have a strong group of entrepreneurial advisors, people with an entrepreneurial can-do mindset. It reminds me of a quote that I hear a lot. “If you want to go fast, go long. If you want to go far, go together.”

Transcript:

Hi, I’m MaryJane Brigger, and I am owner and president of Soul Care Experience. I’m here today to help you to connect, reflect, and renew yourself with the seven healing steps of discovering your authentic self and life purpose within your business.

Healing step number one: connect. Take a few minutes every day to go within. This can be a simple meditation or this can be daydreaming over your morning cup of coffee or on your morning commute.

Number two: gratitude. Think of five to 10 things that you’re grateful for in your life and within your business.

Number three: forgiveness. Forgive yourself for the many times you were not true to yourself or to others.

Number four: compassion. Hold compassion for yourself and the many times, the many difficult obstacles, you had to overcome to become the amazing person you are today.

Number five: celebrate. Celebrate you. Connect to your true authentic self, to that powerful, successful person you are today.

Number six: visualize the life that you wish to lead in one to three years. This is when your life purpose emerges. Be very specific with this. Then feel it, be it, and see it happening to you now.

Number seven: the blessing. Ask your highest power or your greatest source, with gratitude, to bless this visualization and see it manifesting in your life now.

You can follow these healing steps in the order that they were given or, and I highly recommend this method, by taking one healing step at a time and focusing on it every day. This will create a more profound experience in connecting with your authentic self and life purpose within your business.

In this episode Michael Duhr, Graphic design Expert, Web Designer, and Desktop publisher shares The Dangers of Overlooking Graphic Design.
After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Michael’s, 15 minutes of fame, Trials of WD-40, How he followed his nightmares, and more!

Transcript:

I’m Michael Duhr and I’m here to talk about the dangers of overlooking graphic design. When I talk about graphic design, I’m really talking about the topography, the layout, the colors, and the logos that make up the branding of a certain company. I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but bad design will stick out to anybody right away.

Nowadays, although you’re getting bombarded with so many things, it makes it that much more important to care about your graphic design and your marketing because everyone’s seeing so much advertising in their face all the time that it’s really a lot harder now than it ever has been to stick out and to have your message stick with your potential customers, or anyone for that matter.

Although your company’s still going to be judged on the services you provide, your professionalism, and their overall customer experience, it’s very important to make sure that your website and your social media is putting out the right message for your company, because that’s what people are going to see way before they call.

Have you ever met with a business owner, and they really know what they’re talking about, and you’re really impressed with all the knowledge in their respective field, and then they hand you a business card that’s very poorly designed, almost like a middle-schooler’s art project or something, and it’s hard for you in your mind then to not somewhat judge them based upon that because you know they’ve looked at that then and okay’d that, and thought that that was a great representation of their business, and that’s not what you got out of talking with them?

I just think that good design, especially for your website and your business card, is very important to show that you have good taste, and that you have good self-awareness for you and your business, and that you’re putting out the right message to your potential clients and others. Don’t waste marketing time and energy. Get good designs and be remembered.

In this episode Drew Schwanitz Entrepreneur Marketing Consultant Communications expert shares 3 Ways to Improve Your onsite Search Engine Optimization! After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Drew’s, Podcast Pick- TGIM, Getting Lost in Nature, A Daily Philosophy, and more!

Transcript:

My name is Drew Schwanitz, and I am with Torva Local. My tip today is three ways to improve your onsite search engine optimization. Today, I’m going to talk about a few techniques that you can use on your website to improve your search rankings.

Tip number one is to create great quality content. Content is the main reason someone will go to your website. As a result, search engines take notice of this, so the best content gets the best search engine rankings. One way you can take advantage of this is to look at some of your competitors’ content. Look at other people that share the same audience as you and see what they’re writing about, and do it better. Go a little bit deeper, be more informational, be more insightful, be more helpful. Your goal is to be the thought leader, the industry leader, on that particular subject.

Tip number two is to speak their language. It’s important that you understand your audience, and that you’re optimizing your website to the way that they are going to search for your posts and your information. Whether they’re searching for technical terms, or maybe they’re searching using slang terms, it’s important to know that and include it within your content. Once you discover the keywords that you want to focus on, it’s important to keep your primary keyword and your secondary keyword in your title tag and your URL. It’s also good to keep in mind, when you’re creating your posts, to also think about associative keywords. What that means is different words that have the same meaning.

Tip number three is to make sure that your content is shareable. Search engines consider quality outside links to your website as validation. It’s important to keep in mind that your URL is descriptive, and by this I mean people understand what your content is about just by reading the URL. Another important thing to keep in mind is to include social links on your posts, as well. This will make it easier for people to share your content after they read it. And most importantly, there must be sharing value. In order for someone to share your content, there must be something in it for them, as well. Does it make them look smarter? Does it make them look helpful or funny? Any of these things will be an incentive for them to share your content.

In this episode Bonnie Dick: Career Development Consultant, Change Manager, Life Coach Explains why… Attitude is everything! After the tip, we go backstage where Bonnie shares: What’s important in business How to embrace opportunity Positivity Abroad, and more!

Transcript:

My name is Bonnie Dick, and I’m the principal officer of a program called Career Development Consulting, and today I’m going to talk about attitude is everything. When searching for not only a new position, but even in life, just having a good attitude will give you the power to be successful. First of all, understanding who you are is extremely important, and not only that, but understanding what you want to be, because people change, and that’s okay to change. Accepting what has been transpired in your past experiences. That’s, sometimes, very hard to accept things, but I want you to be thinking about that and accepting those, that they’re going to happen from time to time, and now you can really face the future with a positive attitude. Be upbeat and enthusiastic, and you’re going to be successful. Act enthusiastic. As a matter of fact, Dale Carnegie used to say, “Be upbeat and enthusiastic.”

The most important thing in an organization is, “Do you fit my culture?” And fitting your culture is extremely important, and that’s how they make a decision, so if you’re upbeat, enthusiastic, and fit their culture, you’re going to be hired. I also want you to laugh a little bit. What does that do for you? Doesn’t that make you feel good? Doesn’t your attitude feel better? I’m laughing. I’m smiling. I’m feeling good about myself, so smile. Smile is probably one of the most important things to raise your attitude, feel good about yourself, and with, believe in yourself. Please don’t beat yourself up. Don’t talk badly to yourself. Talk well to yourself. You can do anything you want to do if you put your mind to it.

In this episode Ron Papaleo Business owner, Producer, and Entertainer shares 5 ways to help your business stand out in a crowded field! After the tip, we go backstage where Ron shares: The instrument that started it all, Mala Femmena, Why the crowd went wild And more!

Transcript:

I’m Ron Papaleo. I’m a musical entertainer, and I’m going to share with you five ways to make your business stand out in a crowded field. Well, I was a high school music teacher for 31 years, but throughout that entire time, and even going before, back to my college days, I played in local bands as a drummer, and I’ve had wonderful, wonderful experiences. I’ve played in wedding bands, rock and roll bands, musical theaters. I played at the old Front Row Theater, which was a theater on the East Side of Cleveland. I backed the Jackson Five there. I backed Sammy Davis Jr. there and a lot of other noteworthy entertainers, and about five years ago, I decided to start entertaining at senior living residences. I went in my first year from 29 shows to my fourth year, 203 shows, and along the way, I learned a few things, and I’d like to share some of those with you right now.

First of all, you have to believe in your product. You have to have passion for it, and you have to know that it’s something of value, that you have something to offer. As a musician, I’ve always had good feedback from my audiences. I’ve drawn good crowds. I’ve gotten good response. People dance. I’ve gotten requests, and I’ve gotten encores, and I’ve gotten repeat bookings, and that’s how I know that I’m reaching people and I’m offering something of value. The next thing you have to do is, you’ve got to do your homework. You’ve got to know what your competition is doing. You’ve got to understand what kind of equipment you need, what it’s going to cost, how much money you’re going to have to put out to get started. My third tip is to know your audience. There’s a wide range of ages and a wide range of musical styles. People who are in their 80s like to hear music from the 40s and 50s.

People who are in their 70s like to hear music from the 50s and 60s. People in their 90s like to hear music from the 30s. My goal is to always have enough variety that I can please a lot of different people and have each one of them thinking that I was singing just for them. Tip number four is not to be satisfied with just doing the minimum. For me, I write my own arrangements. I produce them. I record them. I play every part, and then I play one part live, along with the prerecorded parts, as I’m singing, so in that way, I’m both the producer, the engineer, the arranger, and the talent. I have to do all four of those things to make my product stand out. Tip number five is to set reasonable goals. There has to be a balance between what you’re doing in your work, what you’re doing in your personal life, and it’s got to fit so that you don’t overwork yourself. You don’t want to burn out, because when you’re burned out, you cannot give 100%.

In this episode Rachel Gordon Artist, Marketing Expert, and Traveler asks How effective is your non-profit marketing? After the tip, we go backstage where Rachel shares: Her ticket around the world, The one thing she does every day, Her quilt of life, And more!

Transcript:

I’m Rachel Gordon with Porath Business Services and Donate My Share. Today my question for you is, how effective is your non-profit marketing? People get so much marketing sent their way these days, both digital and print. It’s so overwhelming.

My question is, are you sending out to a clear and constant message? You want your marketing materials to stand out from that big pile of mail, from the big mound on the kitchen counter. You want people to feel an emotional connection to your organization when they see it? How can you do that?

One, you have to know who your audience is and how to connect them. Come up with a persona, imaginary people. Give them hairstyles, give them names, so you have in your mind a clear picture of who it is that you’re speaking with and what is going to grab their attention.

Two, use stories. Facts, figures, bullet points, those are all great, but stories really will grab people. People love stories. They love telling stories. They remember stories. Make it easy for your supporters to pass on the stories about your organization. Also make sure to use photos to get that extra emotional impact.

Three, have a clear message about your organization’s mission. You know the whole thing with the 30-second elevator speech. You want to have that also for your print materials. Make sure that you have a motto or a tagline, or something that really puts together who you are and what you do.

Four, use effective graphics. Make sure that you have consistent colors across your different materials, that you’re using a similar font, that you have a similar look. Again, so everyone can just see at a glance and make that connection.
Think Bed, Bath & Beyond. You know those postcards that you can tell across the room that it’s from Bed, Bath & Beyond. You want the same thing for your marketing materials.

Five, make it easy for people to support you. Make sure that you have branded donation envelopes in everything that you send out, and piles of them at different functions. Don’t expect people to find an envelope, remember your address. When they have the urge to support you, you want to make it easy for them.

Also, if it’s possible for people to give you donations on your website, you want to make sure that that’s very clear on all of the marketing materials that you send out. Use these five points as a guide and your marketing materials will effectively connect with your audience.

In this episode Nicole Domanski: Web designer, Consultant, and Yoga enthusiast shares 3 Things You Must Consider When Designing Your Online Store! After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Nicole’s, Challenge by chance , Giving back through coding , Italian talents and more!

Transcript:

My name’s Nicole Domanski. I’m the COO of Envalo, and today I’m going to talk about three things you must consider when designing your online store.

The first tip is know who your users are. Find out who are the people that are shopping on your online store. Don’t focus so much on demographics. It’s important to know how old they are, where they’re from, what their gender is, their age, but also know why they’re coming to your store. What are their goals? Do they have any frustrations? Are they shopping at work over lunch? Are they bored? Are they at the grocery store shopping on their phone with kids in their arm? All these things are important to know about your users because it will help us target different promotions at them and how we design and build your website.

The second tip is think about your product data. The first time when a manufacturer builds their online store, a lot of times they’re moving away from a printed product catalog, so you’re used to seeing products a certain way. They’re always on paper. They’re laid out individually. It’s important to know your platform so that you can take advantage of it to display your products in the best way possible.

For example, let’s say you sell t-shirts. A lot of platforms offer ways to display t-shirts where you can allow the users to pick different options. Instead of displaying one t-shirt that’s white and small on one page and one t-shirt that’s white and medium on another page, what you do is you combine it and you display one t-shirt where you allow the users to pick their size and their color and then add it to cart that way. A disadvantage of showing the same product on multiple pages is that it negatively affects your SEO because that’s actually duplicate content.

The third tip is merchandise to your shoppers. Now that you know your users and your product’s in a good place, you can use the platform to your advantage to target promotions at them, and also use different techniques to help them buy. For example, a lot of platforms come with related products and upsells and cross-sells. A related product is when you’re on a product page and you’re shopping for shoes. Related products are shoes that are similar. An upsell on a product page would be fancier shoes that may cost a little bit more. Cross-sells are always in the cart, or usually they are. Cross-sells would be helpful with shoes when … Let’s say you add a pair of shoes into your cart, a cross-sell would be socks because that’s usually something that you buy with shoes.

That’s it. Using these three tips will help influence your online shoppers and increase your sales.

In this episode David Andrews Employment attorney, and Litigator shares 3 great Human Resources tips for successful small businesses. Transcript:

I’m David Andrews, employment attorney. DIY HR, Three Great Tips for Successful Small Businesses.

Small businesses do not have large HR staffs to help you work through all the complicated employment laws, so we’ve come up with three really quick steps to help you manage and navigate your way through the complex web of employment regulations.

First is spend some time thinking about your employment policies. It’s always so much better when you’ve thought about what’s best for your business and what’s best for your employees before a situation presents itself. When a situation arises, you tend to make decisions based on who that person is, not necessarily what’s best for your business, so just take a little time, think through the policies, and you’ll be off to a great start with your HR.

Second is to document. Always people say, “Dave, I don’t have time to document. It takes way too much time to write up a form or come up with some disciplinary notice.” You don’t have to do that. All you have to do is spend 15 seconds and send yourself an email. If one of your employees is late and you’ve had to talk to them about it on a regular basis, just shoot yourself a short email. “Emily was late.” Right there on the email you’ve got the date and you’ve got the time. You’re all set to go for your documentation.

The third step is never make an emotional decision on your employment issues, whether it’s hiring or it’s firing. Most often, we see it in the firing situation. Somebody’s made you really mad. You’re upset about the situation. They’ve really damaged the company and hurt the productivity of the company, but don’t feel like you got to make a decision today. Send the person home. Buy yourself a little time. Preferably talk to your HR lawyer who can help you sort through the various laws that you have to consider before you make the final decision.

There you have it, three do it yourself simple HR steps to make your small business a great success.

In this episode Jennifer Chernisky; entrepreneur, marketing strategist, and public speaker shares 3 Key Ingredients to Create Your Knock-Out Brand Story. After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Jennifer’s; 34 cheerleaders, favorite hobby, journey to Jennasis, and more.

Transcript:

I’m Jennifer Chernisky with Jennesis & Associates, and I’m here to share with you three key ingredients to create your knockout brand story.

First, I recommend that you start with creating your 10 power words. So what are the 10 words that resonate most closely to you, your brand, your business, the words that you often say about yourself or what other people say about you? So some examples might be creative, might be uh intellectual, it may be powerful. What are the words that resonate with you? Expert, expertise,  women-owned. So there’s a lot of words that really align with your business, your culture and your heart that would be your first 10 words to start with.

The second ingredient is what I call Mad Men style. So it’s that brainstorming session, often around  a table, a whiteboard, three to five people. Sometimes wine and scotch is involved, sometimes not. And you really just start putting words against  a whiteboard, of phrases, ideas, pictures, images, and really see what resonates and what doesn’t. Oftentimes that creative process, what comes out of my mind or thought process really sparks someone else’s creativity. And what evolves in that just simple brainstorming session is insanely beautiful by the end.

So the third key ingredient is what we call ‘in the trenches’ and it’s the down-and-dirty part that a lot of people don’t like to do. It’s composed of conducting a competitive analysis. So what are your competitors doing, where are they at on trade shows, on social media, in the marketplace? So really understanding who your competition is and are you aligning with that culture? The second one is understanding your audience demographics. So what’s the age? Is it geography-based? Is it industry-based? Is it B2B or B2C? So understanding who’s buying and paying  you to do your services is a really important key. And then the last one through that is developing your value proposition and your unique selling points. So what are those key words that really differentiate you from your competitors to your audience that you can articulate and your team can articulate well?

So to summarize those three key ingredients, it’s creating those 10 power words which should be fun light, having that Mad Men creative session, and lastly that down-and-dirty market research.

In this episode Marilee MacAskill, Marketing expert, Presentation Coach, And Staff Developer shares 5 Ideas You Can Use to Keep Your Star Players Engaged. After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Marilee’s, Facing life with positivity, Management by intimidation , Lucky Duck Bucket, and more

Transcript:

I’m Marilee MacAskill. I’m the business development manager for Dale Carnegie Training. Today, I’m going to talk about five ideas that you can use to keep your star players engaged. There’s a war for talent today, particularly among companies in Northeast Ohio. People want to hire star employees. If you’re a company owner and lucky enough to have a star employee on your team, you want to do everything you can to keep that person engaged and employed and working for you.

I’ve come up with some tips on how managers can keep their star players highly engaged and on their team. Number one, connect. Connect with your people. The reason people are engaged at a company is also the reason they become disengaged. It all comes down to one relationship and that’s the relationship they have with their boss. If you’re the boss, you want to make sure that your relationship with your people is strong and the kind that they want to stay and work hard for.

Number two, collaborate. When you have to make an important decision, ask your people their opinion. They love to give their input. Number three, have fun, especially millennials in the workplace, enjoy having fun and lightening up in the workplace sometime. Companies like Hyland Software here in town have learned that secret. If you’ve ever gone to Hyland, they have a slide that goes from the second floor down to the first floor in their lobby, and they have all kinds of fun plus contests and incentives to keep their people engaged.

Number four, have the courage to communicate and have those tough conversations with people. You know, your star players do not like having to carry the burden for the heavyweights, the dead weight of your company, so sometimes you need to step up and be a leader and have those difficult conversations. Finally, show appreciation to your people. Give sincere appreciation when you see them doing something that’s above and beyond what they’re asked to do or if you’ve coached them and asked them to make some changes, you see them start to make those changes, praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement.

In summary, if you want to be the kind of company that keeps highly engaged employees, these are our tips. Connect with them, collaborate and include them in your decisions, have some fun at work. Have the courage to have those tough conversations, and finally, appreciate. Be generous in your appreciation with your employees every day and they will feel like they’re valued members of your team.

In this episode Christina Capadona-Schmitz – Marketing communications specialist, journalist, and public relations expert shares; Taking it Personally, Revealing the Real You Through Personal Branding. After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Christina’s, Interesting Career Startup, How she stays busy, Her best college job, and more!

Transcript:

I’m Christina Capadona-Schmitz with Oswald Companies and Christina CS Media, and I’m here today to talk about taking it personally, revealing the real you for personal branding. You know the saying, “It’s who you know.”

Well, I like to say it’s who know you. Personal branding through digital and social media, it gives you the chance for people to know you before they ever meet you, and it also reinforces your leadership and influence that you have in real life.

With millennials now taking over as the largest population in today’s workforce at about 55% and growing, this is a digitally born and bred generations. How are you engaging? How are you reaching potential buyers, prospects, even future employees? The answer is personal branding online, but it’s not about sharing what you had for lunch or funny memes or photos. It’s about visibly demonstrating your thought leadership and influence that you have.

So many people I talk to are so focused on how their personal profile photo looks or having a really impressive description or bio on their social media. These things are important when people are getting the first impression of you online, but what I really try to have them focus on is what are you going to do to demonstrate and communicate your thought-leadership online, what actions are you going to take.

This could come in the form of personal blogging. You could be communicating about your events that you are either speaking at or attending, taking photos, something that really shares the personal side of what you do in and out each day. A lot of times it’s just simply login on and making sure that you’re following, liking, commenting, sharing other people’s content that you find valuable, and it demonstrates the things that you care about and the topics that are important to you.

The only real personal branding strategy that’s going to work is the one that’s going to keep you log in on each day, participating, and engaging. You can hire somebody to get you there and coach you along the way, but at the end of the day, to get real meaningful results, it needs to be the authentic you sharing and guiding people online, and you also might learn something along the way, and it can be fun when done in the right way.

I encourage you to take the tasks seriously and the commitment personally to ensure that you are one of the who is who for the generations to come.

In this episode Jane Pierce; Business owner, Artist, Environmental Enthusiast shares 4 Tips to get your stuff in magazines! After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Jane’s, Seeing the Terminal Tower, Olive Bites, Hobby turned career, and more!

Transcript:

My name is Jane Pierce. My company is ZJayne. I’m going to share four tips to get your stuff in magazines. These are great tips if you’re an artist, a maker, have a product you’d like to get featured in a magazine.

The first one is get yourself on social media. You have to have an online presence. Magazines will find you online. I know it sounds like probably people have to contact magazines and you can do it that way, but actually I’ve been very lucky. Magazines will find you if you get yourself out there. At least a dozen magazines have found me online.

Tip number two is when a magazine contact you, send them your product. Don’t send a high pixel picture. Don’t try to make it work yourself. Send the product. Let go of your product and send it to them. That is a free photo shoot. They do a beautiful job. They’ll send it back to you. They always send it back. Even if you try to give it to them, they send it back.

Tip number three is write your own article for the magazine. You might think that they’re going to do that article, and they can, but they will never say what you’re capable of saying about your product. Write that article. Give it a shot. They’ll tweak it. They might even pay you. You don’t know that. They don’t announce that they will but it’s happened to me. The check arrived in the mail and to my surprise.

My last tip, tip number four, is be patient. It takes a year to get in a magazine. You’ll forget about it and then you’ll get an email or you’ll get a complimentary copy of the magazine, and sometimes even front page. It’s just amazing. Just put it out there and it’ll come back.

Transcript:

I’m Chris Brown, and my company is Marketing Resources and Results. I’m going to talk about who influences your target market. Knowing who influences your target market really helps because when you do your marketing, you’re actually marketing a step above your target market. That way, your money goes further, your budget is stronger, and you’re not marketing to the end user. You’re actually marketing to the referral person. Word of mouth is what a lot of companies count on. Why not market to the influencer, because that’s who provides the recommendations. The Chambers of Commerce can influence particularly consumers because they’re looking for a business that supplies what they need. When you’re a member of a chamber, you can co-market with other chamber members, and that way you actually share customers so that if you have the same target market, they can be influenced by other chamber members referring your services, your products, so it’s a real win/win.

Another example might be an association for the industry. Your potential customers probably belong to their industry’s association, so you may want to check out that association and find out what problems that industry is facing, what challenges they’re trying to overcome. Perhaps your product or service will help with that challenge. LinkedIn is also an influencer because that’s the largest business social media out there. One reason I really like LinkedIn is that you can check out other companies and see what other people in your network have worked with that company or know other people within that company. It helps to give a referral. Even if you don’t talk with that person, you can tell that they’re connected.

There’s a lot of online influencers, but Google really owns that space now. Often people, they even talk about Google as a verb. “Let’s Google it.” People will Google your company to find out what you’ve done and how you’ve served others, what services you provide. If they can’t see your company come up in the results in Google, you might not really exist to them. You might lose credibility. It’s very important to have all of your online media, electronic media, up to date, both from a quality and quantity standpoint.

After the tip, we go backstage and learn about Hiring for keeps, Cleveland POPS + Bruce’s Pop, The driving factor behind his business, and more!

Transcript:

My name is Bruce Newburger, and my company is Dynamics Online. The title of my presentation is Smartphones are Calling, Is Your Website Answering? I’m going to tell you why your website should be mobile friendly, what that means, and how to accomplish it. Why should you care? A growing percentage of website visitors are using mobile devices, like smartphones and tablets. We found that our clients are seeing between 10 and 40% of their visitors coming from mobile devices. Another reason to care is that Google started ranking higher mobile friendly sites when the search takes place on a mobile device.

Let’s talk about what makes your site mobile friendly. Think about a traditional website that’s about 1,000 pixels wide. When you view that on a smartphone that’s only 320 pixels wide, it has to shrink. In order to see the text and the images, you have to pinch in or scroll right and left to see all of the content. Newer browser technology allows the layout to change in response to the width of the browser. That’s what we call responsive design. Is your website mobile friendly? The easiest way to find out is just look at it on a smartphone. Can you read the text and see all time images without pinching in or scrolling right and left. How do you make your website mobile friendly? The fact is that the underlying page structure does need to change. In some cases, we have been able to retrofit existing websites using the data design and existing overall look, but in most cases, the website does need to be rebuilt.

Now we’ve covered why your website should be mobile friendly, what that means, and how to accomplish it. Now let’s take a look at your website and see what you need.

In this episode, Joe Jackson; Independent consultant, Business advisor, and life coach tells us Five Requirements for Successful Change. After the tip we go backstage where Joe teaches us about: Implementing what you read, Objectively modifying, Keeping up with LeanDojo, and more!

Transcript:

I’m Joe Jackson, business advisor with the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program, and an independent consultant. I’m here to discuss five requirements to managing complex change. Well, I can tell you one thing that is a commonality amongst all continuing improvement processes. It always has the requirement that companies be open to the possibility, and the potential for mandated change. As a result of this, we get a little bit closer to our real answer for the entrepreneur if we take a more detailed look at the five requirements or aspects that are required to be in alignment in order to have successful change.

In the accompanying chart, it’s easy to see that the five requirements for successful change management are: vision, skills, incentives, resources, and an action plan. The chart also shows the resultant symptom that you may have experienced if any one of those component requirements was missing throughout the process. The one that I happen to run into the most often is the last one. Many entrepreneurs are able to work out all the details of their continuous improvement program without having a detailed action plan for implementation. This will always result in a false start that is very identifiable in comparison to some of the other symptoms listed on the chart.

The challenge for every business owner is to determine what skills you have internally, what skills you may have to seek out on the outside in order to successfully achieve your continuous improvement and change management goals. Always start with extensive pre-planning, and identify if anybody is needed from the outside. Who might be that correct source? Who might be the right firm? Who has the information that you lack that can help to make the process a success?

In this episode, Rick McDermott; marketing expert, sales trainer, coach and mentor, shares The 4 Steps that Prospects Use to Control the Buying System. After the tip, we go backstage to learn about Rick’s; advice for college students, getting to the “no”… and more!

Transcript:

My name is Rick McDermott, I’m from Sandler Training. Today I’m gonna talk about the four steps that prospects use to control the buying system. Well, when I talk with business owners, CEOs, and business development professionals, they all share a common frustration with me. They tell me things like, “Our pipeline is full, but it takes us too long to close deals.” Or, “We do a lot of … spend a lot of time doing quotes and proposals, only to get a lot of ‘think it overs.’” It’s important to first clarify that there’s really two things going on during the sales cycle. There’s the prospect system, and then there’s the selling system.

Step one of the prospect system is they appear interested and they act motivated. Yet, they don’t want to share too much information with you for fear of losing leverage during the conversation. Their goal is to keep you engaged and interested long enough during the conversation to make it to step two. Step two of the prospect system is free consulting. Typically, this is when they want to know your product, your service, your price, your delivery, your quality, and your specifications, but they don’t want to pay for it. Typically, this comes in the form of a quote or a proposal that you gladly put together given their level of interest in step one.

Step three is where the prospect becomes non-committal. You’re gonna go in for a close, or handle any stalls and objections now that they have your quote. Only this time, they’re not ready to commit, and it’s gonna sound something like this. “Rick, thanks for the proposal. It was awesome, you’ve given us a lot to think about. We’re gonna have to take some time to process it, so give us a call back in a couple of weeks.” Finally, we land on step four, which is hide mode. When we pick up the phone a couple of weeks later to follow up on our quote, we get stuck in voicemail. Only now do we realize that after countless voicemails, and non-returned emails, we’re stuck in the prospect system.

Well, what we can do about this system, is we can have a proven sales system that helps us qualify or disqualify opportunities before we spend too much time, money, and company resources. It’s also important that once we have a system, to be able to debrief the system with a manager or a coach in order to identify opportunities for improvement. The last thing is, we need to practice that system over and over again. So if you want to take control of the selling system, have a system, save time, and close more deals.

Businesses go through a lot before getting a sale. You have to find your prospect, give them your pitch and follow-up with them. But how do you know where your prospects are? What should your pitch be like? And what’s the best way to follow-up? Diane Helbig of Seize this Day Coaching explains each in detail so you can achieve that sales success.

Transcript:

Hi I’m Diane Helbig, business coach with the three key systems for sales success.
There are three systems that you have to have to be successful in sales. First one is a prospecting system. Second one is an actual selling system. And the third one is follow-up. We’re gonna start with the last one and work our way backwards because the prospecting system is really, the most complicated of the three.
So the follow-up system is how do you actually follow-up with people you meet at networking events, how do you follow-up with prospects and how do you follow-up with them after you’ve had a sales conversation with them. The key here is to make a decision about what you actually want to do in those follow-up events. Do you wanna call? Do you want to send an email? Do you want to schedule another meeting? When you’re selling, the best follow-up process is at the end of the selling conversation to set the next appointment.

The selling system for me is when you’re actually across the table from the prospect. You’ve got the meeting with them and this is the place where you wanna have a list of questions that you’ve created that you can ask, and you want to find out things like what is the problem that they’re having what is the event that they’ve got going, whatever it is that’s the actual thing you’re going to be selling them something for, but you also wanna know things like: how do they decision make, what’s their budget, what’s their timeline, who’s in the decision-making process what are the things that they do internally as a business so you can get a feel not only for whether you can help them solve their problem but whether you even want to be working with them or not.

The prospecting system for me really is the most complicated because it’s got the most moving parts to it. The beginning of a prospecting system is to make a decision about who your target audience is and then you go through a process of how am I connected to the people in that organization or to that person, can I get an introduction to them, because the best way to prospect is through a warm introduction. Where you don’t have a connection, you’re gonna have to cold call, you’re gonna have to have a system for cold calling, you’re gonna have to decide what it is— call, email or follow-up? But don’t email first. Maybe send an introductory letter or a card in the mail? It always has to be you taking those next steps, those next actions, so that you can then be in control of the system and the process and all you’re trying to do is get the meeting. That’s when prospecting stops and selling starts.

Expert networker Raquel Eatmon shares her tips on how to take your networking to the next level. By pushing your comfort levels you will gain valuable relationships you may have previously missed out on.

Transcript:

I’m Raquel Eatmon, CEO of Rising Media LLC. Today I’m talking about three ways to push your comfort levels in networking… Well, networking has been a game-changer for me and I really didn’t understand these three principles very well until I really put them to work and once you put them to work, they work. I mean you have to work it in order for it to work for you.

And the first principal is it’s not about you. I know we go into networking events thinking who am I going to meet and who’s going to help me with my next business deal. It isn’t really about you, it’s really about getting to know people, know what they are about, what they’re looking for and that leads me to the second principle— listen more than you speak out.

There is actually this medical study and it said if you listen more than you speak you actually lower your blood pressure and I know it’s not about health and wellness here but the fact is when we listen, we do take in a lot more information. We understand if this is someone later on down the line that might be able to help us or how can you help them. Networking is obviously a give and take situation.

The third principle is one of my all time favorites, you have to network with people outside of your comfort zone. For me, this is getting outside of my bubble. It means finding people who don’t really look like you, maybe their educational background is very different from yours. Maybe they’re into a whole different belief system than you. Whatever it is you gotta shake things up a little bit, talk to people who are very different than you. Why do you do that? You want to get as many points of view about your business or your career as you possibly can, and stepping outside that box or bubble is the sure way to do it.

In this episode Barbara Daniel, public speaker, publisher, and editor of The Cleveland Women’s Journal, explains why In Advertising, It’s All About The Message.

After the tip we go backstage where Barbara reveals when she was not well behaved, a sign that changes her career, the ugly subjects, and more.

Transcript:

I’m Barbara Daniel. I’m the publisher and editor of the Cleveland Women’s Journal Magazine and I’m going to tell you why in advertising that’s all about the message. I have found through advertising experience that what our readers really want is content. Whether you’re advertising in print, on TV, or on radio, it is about the message.

First, identify your customer. Don’t say it’s everybody because it isn’t. You have a specific target market. Identify it and then know and understand the demographics of your best customer. Craft your message based on that demographic. Next, we use the 80/20 rule when we talk about content. We want 80% information, 20% about you. You want to turn the consumer into an educated customer. Customers do want to be educated before they make a purchase, and it’s your information that can help them.

Now, you want to develop a headline that grabs their attention such as, “Eat your way to wellness.”, “Never diet again.”, or something eye opening like, “Success, redefined.” Now as part of your message, be clear and concise in order to create trust with the reader. Do not use industry jargon because they won’t really understand what you’re talking about. Use language that all of us can understand. You don’t need to use big words to show how smart you are. You want to get the message that everyone can read and understand what you’re saying.

Finally, diversify your advertising. Try print, try television, try radio. By all means, use social media, Facebook, Twitter, write a blog, find out what works best for your market. Explore them and then keep track of the possibilities and what is working for you and your message. Whether you’re advertising on television or radio or in print, for content it’s all about the message.

It’s not easy to do presentations in front of an audience– the pressure and attention can be nerve-wracking. But in business, whether we like it or not, we’re tasked to do presentations in front of colleagues, clients… all kinds of people. Phil Stella, President of Effective Training & Communication, gives advice on how to deal with presentation anxiety and well, actually have fun presenting.

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Phil Stella with Effective Training & Communication … empowering business leaders to take the Pain out of Workplace Presentations. And speaking of pain, how many of you experience pain when you deliver presentations at work? How many   hate speaking in public? I see a lot of hands up, so let’s briefly discuss five simple strategies for managing your Presentation Anxiety.

First, it’s a perfectly normal human feeling. Everyone has some degree of PA; It’s caused by reactions to stress and fear.

Second, PA doesn’t have a singular cause. It’s the result of a number of different and separate factors that vary by person and situation. And you can take specific actions to reduce their impact. Begin by clearly identifying each specific factor you think causes your level of PA, like fear of forgetting for fear of audience questions.

Third, for each of these specific causes, what simple steps can you take to reduce or minimize its impact? To minimize the fear of forgetting, practice enough to remember most of your content and create simple, easy-to-read speaker notes to remind you of the rest. Minimize the fear of audience questions by anticipating the obvious ones and creating short clear answers for them.

Fourth, no matter what you do, you’ll still have some level of PA left, so mask the symptoms that show up in your vocal and physical delivery. Pause more and longer … smile more often … sustain eye longer contact … and avoid those movements or gestures that appear nervous. Look and sound confident to your audience … and you are, because their perception is your reality.

And fifth … hard as it sounds … look like you’re having fun up there.

So, there you have five simple strategies for reducing Presentation Anxiety. Best wishes for presenting with more confidence and less pain.

In this episode, David Svigel; co-founder of ROI Selling, marketing leader, and entrepreneur, tells us How To Use A Value Selling Methodology to Close More Deals. Learn how David Svigel; balances life roles, keeps up with technology, his favorite NEO attraction… and more!

Transcript:

I’m David Svigel from ROI selling and I’m here today to talk to you about

“How to Use a Value Selling Methodology to Close More Deals.”

I’m here today to talk to b2b sales reps and help them understand how buyers behavior has changed, and give them some strategies and tools that they can use to motivate buyers to make a buying decision.

Well you know a lot of things have changed you know given the state of the global economy and buyers are now facing pressure because budgets are tighter, there’s more people involved in decisions, and the decisions are also getting pushed upward toward senior management. And then you know with the advent of widespread internet usage buyers are more educated about their options you know they often go to your website or they’re downloading content or research reports. I’d caution though that a more informed buyer is not necessarily a more effective buyer. And the reason is all these different factors come together and it actually hurts the buyer’s ability to make a decision and the result is you have a longer cell cycle.

I think the best way to motivate buyers is to give them a reason to buy and by that, I mean showing them how your solution is either going to save them money or grow their revenues. So buyers today you know don’t necessarily care about marketing speak and use in terms of quality or long-lasting. I find they often tune sales reps out once they start talking about the latest feature. What they really want to know is can your solution help them do more with less. And your job as a sales rep is to show them how much your solution can help them. Quantifying the value of your solution helps your buyer navigate committees and obtain budget approval.

You really need to prepare a cost justification. So using a ROI tool you can calculate the expected value delivered by your solution, and the investment required. The output from those tools is typically an ROI report that shows common financial measures such as net present value, payback period, and internal rate of return.

The most important thing to remember is quantifying your solutions value for buyers helps you close more deals and shortens your cell cycle.

After the tip, we go backstage where Tom shares; must have traits for top candidates, how he inspired troops on 9/11, good news… and more!

Transcript:

My name is Tom Clark. I am with Direct Recruiters and today we are going to talk about:

“Why Confident Speakers Achieve Goals Faster and Improve the Lives of Others.”

For one effective public speaking will increase your self-confidence. It will increase the self-confidence of your audience if they’re in a position where they need to follow you or where you’re trying to inspire them to do something.

I can think of examples in my life as an army officer, as a leader in corporate America where effective public speaking certainly increased the confidence of the team that I was leading. And walking off a stage and having added value for your audience is a way to add confidence for yourself and getting an applause is a way to say “I do know what I’m talking about I am an expert in my space.” Effective public speaking in a work setting certainly improves your value as an individual contributor, as a potential leader, and the value you bring to your organization.

Public speaking is it is a great way to differentiate yourself. so if you are equally talented, equally experienced, equal academic background and years of experience in your field but you’re the one that goes out and speaks publicly and gets recognition for yourself and inspires and engages others and really that becomes a brand. You’re branding yourself as a speaker as a subject matter expert in your field. You’re branding your company and an increasing their exposure and image in the space that you are operating in.

Effective public speaking is a way to increase your likelihood of being promoted within the workforce. And increase the amount of value that you add for your employer because you’re engaging and inspiring others to take action or engaging and inspiring potential customers to purchase your goods or services or the goods and services of your employer.

The best way to improve your public speaking skills through practice. You’ve got to execute what you’ve learned and the most important thing is doing an after action review. Getting feedback from someone in your audience and taking it and documenting it and identifying what went well, what didn’t go well, and what would I do to change the next time I speak. And setting out to make that improvement will make all the difference in the world.

After the tip, we go backstage and learn about; Audrey and Amy’s grueling kickstarter experience, why they aren’t waiting to give back, what loving chaos means… and more!

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Audrey Wallace.

And I’m Amy Husted.

We are the co-founders of Komae.

And we’re here to give you five kid-tested and mother-approved tips for starting your own business.

Tip one is to go for it, but don’t go it alone.

So a lot of people ask, ‘how do you guys do this all?’ and I always answer, ‘I couldn’t do it without my co-founder.’ I was lucky enough to find a girl who has the skills that I don’t. I am the person that gets excited, and goes out, and talks to people and networking events. And then, Amy writes it all down, and she has that to-do list, and she pushes us forward. And having that co-founder is critical to our progress.

But, if you’re not lucky enough to have a co-founder, that’s okay. Just be sure to plug into your local accelerator programs. They’re there purposely to connect you to professionals in the industry.

Tip number two: Show up and speak up. So you’re involved in these groups in your area, but you have to actually show up to their events. And when you get there, speak up. Don’t sit in the corner and be shy, you want to introduce yourself. Shake hands, collect business cards, and then reconnect with those people. Email them, and ask them if they can help you. That’s what they’re there for.

Tip number three is to write it down and get it done. Now, Audrey has a lot of ideas, always has ideas. But I’m the one that helps her get it done by writing it down. Make a list, have tangible goals, know what marks you need to meet, and when you need to meet them.

Tip number four is to stay humble in the highs and hopeful in the lows. Your entrepreneurial journey is going to be a roller coaster; you’re going to have a lot of highs but a lot of lows as well. Now when you’re up high, stay humble. Thank those that have helped you to get there. And when you’re in that low, stay hopeful. Keep moving, keep progressing, don’t focus on perfection, just focus on progress.

And tip number five is to stay grounded in your “why.” Know exactly why you’re starting this business, what passion are you following. That “why” is your engine that’s going to keep you going from those highs to those lows, and back and forth. Sunny day, rainy terrain, your engine will keep you going if it’s solid and it’s purposeful.

After the tip, we go backstage where Jessie reveals; her desire to make an impact, an ironic kickstart to her career, a surreal experience with her heroes… and more!

Transcript:

My name is Jessie Perry. I’m the owner of JPerry fitness and today I’m going to give you 5 Super Simple Ways to Improve Your Health and Business Success.

Taking care of your health will not only fuel your life with more energy but it’s going to help to skyrocket your career.

Tip number one is to find time to work out. Now this is the biggest excuse that we hear from a lot of busy professionals is that it’s just too hard to find time to actually fit in exercise in your day. But what I want you to focus on is trying to get in 30 minutes at least four to five times a week. Now if you can’t do 30 minutes at a time, you could always break that up and do maybe 15 minutes at lunch and 15 minutes after dinner. And if you did that every single day, that would make a huge difference in how you’re feeling and how you’re performing at work.

Tip number two is to pack your meals for work. Now this may sound really simple but even just packing your meals is going to save you a ton of extra calories and fat that you’re going to be able to escape by bringing a lunch instead of spending your dollars at a fast food place. An idea to pack for lunch is a meal packed with lean protein, vegetables, and even healthy fats, like nuts or avocados. This is going to help power you through the rest of the day and keep you away from that two o’clock slump.

Tip number three is to take one to two hours every week to meal prep. I know this sounds tedious, but if you do it, it’s going to save you so much time and it’s going to be able to equip you with healthy choices while you’re in a hurry flying out the door.

Tip number four is to be prepared at your desk. Have healthy snacks on hand, like whole fruit, nuts, and even homemade protein bars. This is going to keep you away from those vending machines and keep you healthy and feeling good all day long.

Tip number five is to be drinking water all day. Just attach a water bottle to yourself. Aim for half of your body weight in ounces and that’s going to curb cravings all day, keep you full, and keep you hydrated; feeling energized and great at work.

So there you have it. These were five super simple ways to improve your health and business success. The key is to have a plan and then follow it. Make these small adjustments every day and you’re gonna be living a great life.

In this episode, Christina Hidek; business owner, professional organizer, and de-cluttering coach, shares 5 Ways to Get More Done While Working Less. After the tip, we go backstage and learn more about; how a reality TV show changed her career path, her favorite business podcast, an analogy to keep on track… and more!

Transcript:

I’m Christina Hidek, organizing guru and decluttering coach of Streamline Living, and I’m here to share with you Five ways to Get More Done While Working Less.

I’m going to dispel a few myths and cause you to think a little bit differently about the way that you’re working.

The first tip I have is to not multitask. This is perhaps the greatest myth there is of all time. You can’t get more done when you multitask. In fact, as the complexity of your subject matter increases, it can take up to forty percent longer to get that one task done then if you had just focused on one thing at a time.

My second tip is to plan ahead. You need to have a daily and also weekly plan that supports your long-term goals. You can’t just be trying to live on the fly every day and making it up as you go. You’ll never get to where you want to be.

My third tip is to avoid distractions. Every time you get on social media, it takes you up to 23 minutes to get back on task. You have to think about if it’s really worth your time to get on to Pinterest or get on to Facebook, to catch up on the latest business news, or to see the cutest cat picture a friend just posted. Is that really worth it or do you need to stay focused on your task?

My fourth tip is to stop guessing how long certain tasks are going to take you. Most of the tasks that we do in business are repetitive, we do them again and again. So you should figure out how long it takes you to do each task and plan accordingly. So the next time you have five minutes, don’t try to squeeze a 15-minute task into that amount of time. It will set you off your game for the rest of the day and you’ll not be really happy with yourself.

My fifth and final tip is to identify your most productive time. I like to call these my ninja hours. It’s the time of the day when you can get through your To-Do list the fastest and really slay your list. If you try to work at times that you’re not in your optimal state, it’s going to take you way longer and your end result isn’t going to be as good as if you concentrated your hardest tasks to be completed during your ninja time.

So I hope you use these five tips to really help you work less and work smarter.
