My Instagram feed has always been full of photos and videos of food, people in pretty outfits and cute animals. More recently though… I’m seeing ads on my feed!

How? Why?

Instagram has opened their advertising to businesses of all sizes since September 30. Before, only big companies like Disney, Activision and Banana Republic could advertise on Instagram and not all users had ads on their feed. Now, like it or not, everyone can expect ads including video ads to be seamlessly integrated in their Instagram feed.

As a credit to Instagram, three weeks into the change, I’ve seen an array of well-targeted ads on my feed. They’re pretty much what I like to see, they look exactly like my friends’ posts except for the “Sponsored” text at the upper right and a call-to-action on the lower right. Some of the ads make me stop and stare since it has almost no difference with organic posts. I haven’t seen enough video ads yet though, which is a shame, because Instagram auto-plays videos and they are definitely more eye-catching than photos. Just like Facebook, I’m sure video ads will take off soon too!

More News Feed Ranking Factors

Not just likes, shares or comments affect your video’s ranking on someone’s newsfeed but how long people actually watched, if they turned on the sound while they watched it and if they watched it in full-screen.

 

New Video Ad Pricing

Facebook has added a new option in pricing video ads, you can now choose to be charged only if someone viewed your video for at least 10 seconds. Previously, the only option available was cost-per-impression, and advertisers couldn’t be sure if Facebook users even really watched their video ad.

 

Brand New Video Ad Metrics

Advertisers now have the access to more insights on their video. It’s located in the “Video” tab on the Facebook Page Insights. Facebook explains it in detail here! 

 

New Feature: Floating Video Player

You can now detach a video from the news feed and continue scrolling on your browser. Not all accounts have it yet, but Facebook is testing it out slowly on a few accounts.

Great article from Brian Honigman! The article explains the advantages of uploading exclusively to YouTube or Facebook or–to both.

“Facebook video will really succeed with content that relies on social lift, whereas YouTube will still be the source for video content with staying power.”

Brian explains that Facebook videos can be used to direct viewers to their YouTube channel, sort of like a promotion. Michelle Phan, a popular makeup guru, uses this method to utilize both channels effectively.

On the other hand, BuzzFeed uploads all their content on Facebook and YouTube. Their goal isn’t to direct their audience to a particular channel, but to distribute their content everywhere and anywhere.

In the end, it’s all about what the goal of your campaign is. Asking this before choosing where to upload will tremendously help you succeed!

  • Users now register three billion video views on Facebook each day.
  • All of those video views are for native videos — directly uploaded to Facebook.
  • 65% of the site’s video views come from users on mobile devices.

The article also notes that while Facebook has plans to increase video ads in users’ timelines, it’s still unclear exactly when and what this means for video advertising on the site.
